Meaning of "Hallows"/Attack on Hogwarts

My early prediction was for the title to follow an established pattern:
Stumbleine_ (posting here on HPANA) connected the Founders' objects (and hence the Horcruxes) to the Arthurian Hallows even before the title was announced.

Vaudree (posting here) made a strong case for Voldemort going after Hogwarts and Weasle Diva (posting here) made the case for Voldemort wanting his Horcruxes stowed at the school.

The Four Elements & Ravenclaw's Wand

Hairy Pooter (posting on HPANA) wrote a fine piece about the classical elements in Harry Potter. His thread is now missing, but hopefully I can get him to repost the material.

A number of people have suggested "Ravenclaw's Wand" (stored in Ollivander's shop window) as a Horcrux, but I credit Hairy Pooter with the most complete theory (it might have been the first, I'm just not sure). Certainly, he was the first to connect the foundation date for Ollivander's shop (382 B.C.) with the Greek development of the Classical Elements.

Rowling's words, from a Mugglenet interview,

It is the tradition to have four houses, but in this case, I wanted them to correspond roughly to the four elements. So Gryffindor is fire, Ravenclaw is air, Hufflepuff is earth, and Slytherin is water...

Dedication to Anne Volant

This is my own guess, although it seems fairly obvious.

Leaving Privet Drive

Ann's essay, The Secrets of Grimmauld Place, is available right here on ginnymented.com (thanks, Ann!).

Anca P., posting on HPANA (then known as ALuna), first brought attention to a pattern whereby each of the Seven Sins was represented in one of the Harry Potter books.

Hairy Pooter took the idea and ran with it, coming up with the Seven Corporal Acts of Mercy (posted here) which I modified only slightly. These Acts are listed on wikipedia, among other places.

Dudley the Metamorphmagus is my own crazy idea. However, many others have previously suggested Dudley as the "late bloomer" to display magical ability. They've also made note of how Petunia and Vernon pamper Dudley so thoroughly. The idea here is that Petunia knows (or suspects) and she has been preventing Dudley from becoming angry enough to use magic. If true, this means Dudley most likely performed his first inadvertent magic early in GoF when he was put on a diet.

Kreacher's Cache / The Locket

The identity of R.A.B. (Regulus) was guessed by the folks at Mugglenet.com immediately after the release of Half-blood Prince. The identity is confirmed by many foreign language editions where the third initial matches the word for 'black' (thanks to JustHarry and Lord Voldefart for bringing this to my attention here).

The importance of Percy's letter and the possibility of the scraps going through the Floo network are part of Bob's work (see A Complete Translation of Percy's Letter).

The existence and contents of Kreacher's hiding spot are my own original guesses.

Regulus is a Ghost

I'm not the only one to suggest that Regulus is a ghost, but I consider this my own theory.

I first conceived of Regulus the "friendly" ghost in a FanFic (Importance of Timing) back in October of 2005. The idea developed with the so-called "Reminder Rule" following a discussion on the Percy's Letter thread (it's hard to tell from my posts, because I clipped my own references to Regulus in anticipation of the then-forthcoming "complete" theory, but it's there).

True, Book Basilisk did write an editorial called The Ghost of R.A.B. on Mugglenet, but it's completely irrelevant. B.B. didn't write about whether or why R.A.B. had become a ghost. The editorial was about a specific R.A.B. candidate (Professor Binns) who just happened to be a ghost.

(This is in no way intended as a dig at Book Basilisk. The editorial is a fun and well-written piece of speculation, and despite being wrong, it's at least as good as my own wrong guess from August 2005, which was Amy Benson.)

Spider Symbolism

This is my own theory.

Regarding boggarts, it has been asked why Ron's is a spider instead of Neville's. Ron isn't afraid of Snape (no more than Harry is), but what he does fear is moral ambiguity. He likes the world neatly divided into friends and enemies. Ron is afraid of having to accept Snape as both a git (which he is) and an ememy of Voldemort's (he's that, too). Ron is the one who claims that Snape is using Occlumency lessons to make Harry more vulnerable (OotP 25). Ron is also the victim of (spider-like) Horace Slughorn's rudeness (Slughorn can't even remember his name) and Slughorn's poisoned mead.

Neville, on the other hand, does not fear the moral ambiguity of "good guys" from Slytherin. His problem with Snape is very personal and has little to do with Snape's loyalties.

Regulus as the Bloody Baron

The identity of Regulus as the Bloody Baron is my own theory. I don't know of anyone else who's written up this kind of evidence, nor, indeed, anyone else who even believes it. :-)

Bob came up with the idea that Bellatrix was sent after (or volunteered to go after) Regulus and attempted Legilimency on him. It's in Bubbles and Memory and forms the core of another exciting theory. I connected Bella to the Bloody Baron's gauntness and staring after reading that.

Snape is Loyal to Dumbledore

Thousands, probably millions of Potter fans thought this after reading Half-blood Prince. Most of the evidence I gave showed up early on in a thread called Snape still loyal to DD? on HPANA (there's a decent summary here, which also happens to argue against the then-popular 'Dumbledore isn't dead' theory).

Rannaro's idea about Snape's boggart appears in the year three edition of her Snape chronicles (Two More for Azkaban). You can read that series from the beginning with A Difference in the Family right here on Ginnymented.com.

Vultures and Eileen Prince

The general vulture omen is a result of my own digging.

Note on Broderick Bode: There are several possible ways Snape might be connected to this death. He could have made Polyjuice Potion for whatever Death Eater delivered the Devil's Snare in disguise, for example. Also see Bob's Bubbles and Memory for connections between Snape and the Closed Ward.

Irma Pince as Eileen Prince seems to be a theory with multiple origins. My main contribution is the vulture bit (I did not come up with the anagram or the observation about Pince's reaction to the Potions book). In my opinion, the best work on this theory is Madam Pince: Is She Really Eileen Prince? by PAM2002 (on Scribbulus), which uncovers some convincing behavioral parallels between Snape and the librarian.

Also thanks to stumbleine_ (on HPANA) who clarified my initially sloppy explanation of Pince-as-vulture.

Snape and Lily

This is another theory with multiple origins. But I credit Rannaro with convincing me and also with the development of so many details, including the relationship in Potions class, the memories in Occlumency lessons (like the boy on the bucking broomstick), and Snape's reaction to the Prophecy. (Again, start with A Difference in the Family to get the whole story.)

The "Patterns of Animosity" (which I wrote up here) are pretty original, but the foundation was still inspired by Rannaro's work.

The Patronus, being based on my strange ideas about spiders, is obviously an original guess. I should note that Rannaro offers an alternative form for Snape's Patronus: a fox.

This is firstly a quasi-homonym for Fawkes, telling us about Snape's loyalty. We know Rowling uses homonyms and partial homonyms a lot (Grimmauld Place = grim, old place; Diagon Alley = diagonally). It also matches the animal which Bella killed on her way to visit Snape in HBP 2, thus representing Bella's strong animosity toward Snape.

Lily's interest in James, from the Worst Memory

Yes, Lily is coming to Snape's rescue, and very sincerely. But read the scene again and pay attention to her focus -- it's all on James. Lily is attracted to him, but James's arrogance and bullying make him unsuitable as a romantic interest. She is angry because James falls short of her expectations. This is exactly the sentiment she expresses, too. Lily practically lays out the conditions for James to meet if he wants to date her.

Lupin Leads the Order

I came up with this on my own, although it seems obvious enough that I'm sure many others have theorized it independently.

Krum as the D.A.D.A Teacher

I got the idea "somewhere" but I can't, for the life of me, remember where I saw it. So I wrote up the evidence that I could think of, although I'm sure it's been mentioned before.

Wormtail Impersonating Percy

Bob Rozak credits the initial idea (Percy being Wormtail on Polyjuice Potion) to, er... somebody else (another HPANA member, I believe, who is no longer around). But Bob developed the theory in depth, came up with the translation of Percy's letter, and just applied a lot of general brilliance to the issue. You can read his full analyses here: "Peter" Weasley" and A Complete Translation of Percy's Letter.

Hufflepuff's Cup

Bob Rozak first theorized that Hufflepuff's cup is actually hidden in the secret chamber at Wiltshire. He may be right, but that seems a little bit too easy to me.

Ron's involvement in destroying the cup Horcrux is just one permutation of many, many Ron theories that I've worked on, having never reached a satisfactory conclusion. Ron has too many clues around him.

Anca (formerly ALuna), BE Skrewt, Weasley Diva and several others have added contributions to Ronology on the HPANA thread.

Gryffindor's Sword

All of the essentials are from Bob Rozak's short but very interesting piece called The Phoenix, the Ouroboros, and the All Seeing Eye. We'll see about getting that one here on site.

Skeeter at Godric's Hollow

The part I picked up from HP Super Sleuths is here. The rest I added.

Fidelius Charm on Godric's Hollow

The question "Is the Charm still working?" has been asked many times and answered both ways. This is my particular take.

I'm sure something else will happen there other than Harry finding the old motorbike, but I'm not sure what. Maybe he'll find Rita's old quill lying around. It's vaguely possible, too, that this could turn out to be the location of the final battle owing to the limited access (which currently includes Harry, Hagrid, Voldemort, Pettigrew, and possibly Skeeter).

Bubbles, Memory, the Closed Ward and Neville

This is entirely the brainchild of Bob Rozak from beginning to end. My only role has been to sit here staring with my gum falling out of my mouth.

I've given the theory short shrift, to be sure, so don't miss out on the whole story: Bubbles and Memory.

Draco and Fenrir

I read this in a few places, so I don't know exactly where it originated. Tami (a.k.a. Gnargles&Snorkaks) tells me she first read the prediction in The Alchemists Cell by John Granger.

The idea of Draco showing a bite mark instead of the Dark Mark is certainly not mine. I'll thank Rannaro for presenting the argument that Draco didn't have a Dark Mark (noting that he reached the top of the Astronomy Tower before the barrier was erected).

Death and Death Omens

The Predictions summary barely scratched the surface of what's written up in Daniel's theory on death omens, which focuses on the "Filch" part of CoS 8, and my own theory (will add soon) which focuses on the party itself.

Bob Rozak contributed some observations to Daniel's theory, and he also came up with an extensive theory on Fred and George which he even put to music: Fred and George: A Prediction in Rhyme (you can also read the lyrics here on HPANA.)

Lily's Eyes and Harry's "Special Place" Duel with Voldemort

These two items are presented in the opposite order that they were written.

Bob Rozak developed the notion of Harry and Voldemort's eye-lock duel. Be advised that my summary isn't entirely consistent with Bob's conclusions, and of course it leaves out some very good stuff. You can get the whole story with How to stop a Dark Lord in his Tracks.

My analysis of Lily's irresistable eyes was then inspired by Bob's observations.

The Fourth-floor Tunnel

Thanks to Marie Ravenclaw, halfbloodprince, & JustHarry on the Wizard War Thread for arousing my suspicions on this one.
